If you’ve ever seen photos with that dreamy, soft glow, where the light feels warm and magical, chances are they were taken during golden hour. As a photographer here in Illinois, golden hour is my favorite time to capture portraits outdoors.
But what exactly is golden hour, and why does it make such a difference in your photos? Let’s dive in.
What is Golden Hour?
Golden hour is the short window of time just after sunrise or right before sunset when the sun sits low in the sky. The light is softer, warmer, and more flattering compared to the harsh midday sun.
In Illinois, golden hour usually lasts about 45–60 minutes, depending on the season. In summer, this could be as late as 7:30–8:00 PM, while in fall, it happens much earlier in the evening.
Why It’s the Best Time for Photos
1. Soft, Flattering Light
Midday sun can create harsh shadows, squinting, and uneven lighting. Golden hour, on the other hand, bathes everything in a gentle glow that flatters skin tones and creates a natural radiance.
2. Warm, Romantic Colors
The golden tint of the sun at this time adds richness to your photos. From warm golds and ambers in summer to softer pinks and oranges in autumn, it creates a natural color palette that feels timeless.
3. Dreamy Backdrops
Whether we’re in a park, a field, or your favorite suburban spot, golden hour light transforms the setting. Leaves glow, grass sparkles, and the sky becomes part of the art.
4. Perfect for Playful Moments with Kids
Small children often love evening sessions; it feels more relaxed, and they get to run around while I capture candid, joy-filled moments. The softer light means I can let kids move freely without worrying about unflattering shadows.
5. Adds a Magical Feel to Your Photos
Golden hour creates that cinematic, almost storybook feel you see in professional portraits. It turns an ordinary evening into something extraordinary, and your photos reflect that magic.
