Posing Tips for People Who Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera
If you ever feel a little uncomfortable taking photos, you are definitely not alone. Most people I photograph tell me the same thing before their session: “I don’t know how to pose.” The good news is that you do not need to be a model to look great in your photos. A few simple tips can help you feel more relaxed and confident, and that comfort always shows through in the final images.
Here are some easy posing tips that make a big difference during your session.
Relax your shoulders
One of the easiest ways to look more natural is to simply drop your shoulders. When you are tense, your shoulders tend to rise, which can make you look stiff. Taking a deep breath and letting your shoulders fall instantly softens your posture.
Shift your weight
Standing evenly on both feet often feels rigid. Try shifting your weight to one side. This creates a gentle curve in your body and instantly feels more natural. It also gives your pose a bit of movement, which photographs beautifully.
Use your hands
Hands can feel awkward if you are not sure what to do with them. A simple solution is to give them a purpose. You can lightly hold your dress, touch your hair, place a hand in your pocket, or gently rest your fingers on your arm. Small movements like these make your pose feel effortless.
Find a comfortable angle
Facing the camera straight is not always the most flattering angle. Turning your body slightly to the side while keeping your face toward the camera creates a softer look. A slight tilt of the chin or lifting your eyes toward the light can also add subtle polish without feeling posed.
Keep moving
The best photos often happen between the poses. Walking, swaying, laughing, or playing with your hair helps you loosen up and feel more like yourself. Movement brings life to your images and keeps the session feeling fun rather than stiff.
