Booking your first photo session with little ones can feel both exciting and a bit overwhelming, especially when you’re hoping for sweet smiles and cooperation. The good news? It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.

As a family and maternity photographer, I’ve worked with toddlers, babies, and energetic siblings of all kinds, and I’m here to make the process relaxing and enjoyable!

Here are 5 things to know before your first session with small children:

1. Kids Don’t Need to “Behave”

Let go of the idea that your child has to sit still or smile on command, that’s not the goal.

The best photos come from authentic moments; whether it’s your toddler running through a field, hugging your leg, or giggling mid-spin. I gently guide children with playful prompts and let their personalities shine through.

A little chaos is normal. It’s also where the magic happens.

2. Bring the Basics (And a Bit More)

Think of your session like a mini outing. Here’s what helps:

  • Snacks (non-messy ones work best!)
  • Favorite comfort item (a small stuffed animal, lovey, or pacifier)
  • Wipes and extra clothes (just in case)
  • Water bottles for everyone

Also, don’t be afraid to pause mid-session for a quick reset or cuddle break!

3. Keep Outfits Comfortable and Kid-Friendly

Choose outfits that your child can move in, sit in, and feel good wearing.

Soft fabrics (like cotton, knits, or linen) photograph beautifully

Neutrals or muted tones help keep the focus on connection

Avoid itchy tags, tight collars, or anything they’ve never worn before, it’s not the day to test a new dress or shirt

Tip: Dress kids last to avoid spills, and bring backups just in case.

4. Timing is Everything (For Them)

Sessions are scheduled around the best natural light, but we also work with your child’s rhythm.

Mornings or early evenings often work well for little ones. We’ll avoid nap time or mealtime to keep everyone happy and relaxed.

Even if things don’t go 100% as planned, trust that I’ll capture something real and meaningful.

5. You Set the Tone

If you’re calm, playful, and go with the flow, your child will too. The more relaxed you are, the better they’ll feel.

So, breathe. Let them be silly. Snuggle in close. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about your connection.

Years from now, it’s those little real moments you’ll love the most.
